HOZU Capital Brings a Third-Party Funder’s Perspective to Hong Kong Arbitration Week 2026 Panel on Sanctions and Arbitral Award Enforcement

On 20 October 2026, during Hong Kong Arbitration Week, the European Chinese Arbitrators Association (ECAA) and the Asian Academy of International Law (AAIL) co-hosted a seminar titled “The Boomerang Effect of Sanctions: What Does That Mean for Enforcement?” Tiana Zhang, Head of International Business at HOZU Capital, joined leading international arbitration and dispute resolution practitioners to share a third-party funder's perspective on the impact of sanctions on cross-border dispute resolution, enforcement strategies, and the practical challenges of achieving successful recoveries.

The seminar opened with a keynote address by Adrian Lai JP, Barrister at Des Voeux Chambers, Deputy Secretary-General and Co-Convenor of the Advisory Board of Asian Academy of International Law (AAIL). The panel discussion was co-moderated by Alice Meissner, Chair of European Chinese Arbitrators Association (ECAA) and Partner at Fieldfisher, and Jacky Fung, Senior Associate at Freshfields. Tiana joined fellow panellists Robert S. Pé, Arbitrator and Mediator at Arbitration Chambers; Sherlin Tung, Counsel at Withers; and Tobias Vollmer, Partner at Raedas, to discuss asset dissipation risks, regulatory issues, the choice of arbitral seat and enforcement jurisdiction, shedding light on a third-party funder’s perspective on these issues.

Through in-depth discussions, interactive case studies and live audience polling, panelists explored the far-reaching impact of sanctions on cross-border dispute resolution and arbitral award enforcement. Key topics included asset dissipation risks, regulatory complexities, and the strategic selection of arbitral seats and enforcement jurisdictions. Drawing on practical experience, Tiana shared a third-party funder’s perspective on key considerations in assessing enforcement risks, developing funding strategies and achieving successful recoveries.

HOZU remains committed to international engagement, staying abreast of sanctions and regulatory developments to strengthen its expertise in third-party funding and cross-border dispute resolution.
